Where Do We Draw The Line?

BY DOMINICK DICARLO | STAFF WRITER

We have just experienced two months that will be forever seared into American history. The confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the highest court in the land (the Supreme Court) will be read about by high school students decades from now. But, Americans must now ask each other, “What will be written on the pages of those history textbooks?” Will our children’s textbooks read that this was the moment America lost its way? I for one hope this won’t be the case but, I’m not certain that this is the way the rest of America feels. We’ve spent the past three weeks watching a lynch mob attempt to take down someone who had a nearly spotless record. This begs any honest American to ask if this could also happen to them. If we give in to this grotesque mob mentality, we will be giving up one of the things that makes America fundamentally unique. Here in this country, you are presumed innocent until proven otherwise; this shouldn’t just be in a court of law but also in the court of public opinion.

Throughout this entire confirmation process, it was laughably obvious what the Democrats intentions were. Senator Chuck Schumer spoke quite eloquently about all of this back on July 9th, “I will oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination with everything I have, and I hope a bipartisan majority will do the same. The stakes are simply too high for anything less.” Before there were any hearings held and before we had any accusations of sexual assault, Democrats came out against then-Judge Kavanaugh in full force. When the Democrats incessantly called for FBI investigations into the allegations made by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, everyone in America knew that the findings would not change the outcome of the vote.

In the end, what did all of this teach us about where we stand as a nation? It’s taught us that we have indeed arrived at a turning point in American history. We have reached such a bitter partisan time in our politics that we will convict people with whom we disagree, even without evidence to back up our accusations. The state of civil discourse in America is being threatened by forces on the left who wish to grab power from the hands of Republicans by any means necessary. It seems as if many of us need to relearn the lessons of To Kill A Mockingbird all over again. In the harrowing tale, it was the presumption of guilt rooted in prejudice that ruined an innocent man's life. This same thing almost happened in the year 2018, that is unacceptable.

Senator Lindsey Graham said it best last week right to the faces of his Democratic colleagues, “Boy, Y'all want power. God, I hope you never get it. I hope the American people can see through this sham.” When the midterm elections take place less than a month from now, we'll see whether the American people heed Senator Graham’s warning.
